What does European Court of Justice?

Since its establishment in 1952, the role of the ECJ has been to ensure that the law is upheld in the interpretation and application of the Treaties. This includes that the ECJ

- reviews the legality of the actions of the EU institutions,

- ensures that the EU Member States comply with the obligations arising from the Treaties, and

- interprets Union law at the request of national courts.

Practical example

The European Court of Justice monitors compliance with data protection and can impose fines or order measures in the event of violations.
